"It is hard to imagine a more perfect pitch in terms of challenging vs. accessible. I wanted something humanistic, intellectual and emotional. In every way my hopes and expectations were exceeded. I would say it was exactly what I had hoped for, except that it was much, much more." John Bergez, USA
Summer school participants come from all over the English speaking world, ranging in age from 18 to 95. We workshop the plays set wholly or partially in Italy with experienced practitioners many of whom are long-time associates of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Globe.
Our summer schools are a great way of bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together to work on three plays in depth, like a speeded up rehearsal process. Tutors have included actors Janet Suzman, Michael Pennington, John Nettles, Jane Wymark, Charlotte Cornwell, Josie Lawrence and directors Bill Alexander, Lucy Bailey and Christopher Luscombe.
Our first course was held in Urbino ( the Ducal palace is pictured ) in 2014 and again in 2015.
In 2017 we were in Padua and in 2018 in Pizzo Calabro in Calabria. The fifth will take place in Florence at the British Institute in July 2019.
5th Shakespeare in Italy Summer School, Florence, July 6-19
Shakespeare in Italy's 5th summer school is to be held this year at the British Institute in Florence from July 6 – 19. www.britishinstitute.it We're thrilled to welcome Globe and RSC directors and actors Lucy Bailey, Philip Franks and Christopher Luscombe as tutors. The course is practical and open to all, the only proviso being that you speak English fluently. Everyone is encouraged to put scenes from the plays on their feet but in past years some people have wanted to participate from the comfort of their seats. Both approaches are welcomed!
The benefits are innumerable and there is always a lot of fun to be had as well as gaining great theatrical insight into the texts. Please contact Mary Chater at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions you may have.
We'd love you to join us but don't delay booking because summer hotel rooms in Florence go like hot cakes! If you would like to book, email Mary asap. She will give you the details you will need to make your deposit and save your place on the course.

"The course was above and beyond my expectations. Bill is the most outstanding teacher. Clear, knowledgeable, expert, living treasure. Having the group so intelligent and with so much life experience was an unexpected bonus. I loved the friendly, caring family atmosphere. It was a life changing two weeks for me and I thank you from the bottom of my heart."
Lyn Pierse, Actress, Australia
"Bill's session at Cagli theatre had us presenting scenes from the play and that was very successful. It is such a special thing to work on a stage."
Reg Grouse, teacher aged 92, Australia.
"I cannot thank you enough for your vision, organization and clear passion. This has been one of the most rewarding educational experiences of my life and I return home with many ideas for infusing more passion into my own teaching of Shakespeare."
